Inspiring women: Interview with Sanna Hörvallius

By in Interviews

We started this Interview series to create a space for inspiring women to share their stories, thoughts and goals in life. Being a female-led brand, we value strong, independent, uplifting and inspirational women, just like our first participant – let us introduce you to Sanna Hörvallius!

HEJ SANNA! SO HAPPY YOU AGREED TO TAKING PART IN OUR INTERVIEW TODAY. WE ARE SUCH BIG FANS OF YOURS, BUT WOULD YOU MIND INTRODUCING YOURSELF FOR THE ONES WHO DON’T KNOW YOU YET?

Hi! What an honor to being a part of your community and message of strong women around the world. I really enjoyed the work you did with Laura and the collection turned out so hot! So thank you first of all for the invitation!

My name is Sanna and I come from a little small town in Småland, Sweden. 2012 I graduate gymnasium and went traveling and has never really come back since. I fell in love the ocean and now surf as much as I can between studies, sleep and food haha

LET’S BEGIN BY CONGRATULATING YOU FOR WINNING THE 2020 SWEDISH CHAMPIONSHIP IN SURFING! WHAT DOES SURFING MEAN TO YOU? HOW HAS WINNING THIS COMPETITION INFLUENCED YOU OR YOUR LIFE?

When I first got in to surfing, I told myself from pretty much the first day “I going to become the Swedish champion one day” witch today sounds totally crazy considering it took me 3 months to stand up on my feet 😉 so winning the championship was amazing!

It was a challenging day big and messy on a spot I normally don’t really surf, Torö, Stockholm. I caught a wave in the last second that decided the result, it was so close! This inspired me even more to continue just putting more time in to the ocean, and especially in the cold waters. I feel at home there!

WE LOVE THAT YOU REPRESENT FEMALE SURFERS ALL OVER. WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE SPORT ORIGINALLY? WHAT GREETINGS WOULD YOU SEND TO WOMEN WANTING TO TAKE UP SURFING?

Thank you so much for the acknowledgment. I tried so many different sports and at. Some point I tried skating and I thought it was super fun but way too painful, so I thought about what the next thing to this could be

I have a family member in France that runs a Surf house in Hossegor and I decided to contact her about volunteering and trying out surfing, and from the very beginning I was all in as much as I could!

Just do it! Get out there, have fun and ask people if you are unsure, catch a ride with other lady sliders! Also take no shit, the surfing world can be very territorial space and sometimes lack of respect especially for a woman

WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? WHO INSPIRES YOU MOST – IN OR OUTSIDE THE WATER?

The wonderful women around me all are huge role models for me. I have been so lucky to have bumped in to all the power women around my travels and the women I grew up with all influence me more then can imagine I think haha. We all have courage in different ways, and we all shine in different rays!

In the water I have so much respect for Coco Ho, Leah Dawson and Justine Dupont. All so inspiring in so many ways! I love the different approach they must surfing but all have such a beautiful way of flowing!

WE KNOW THE SURF IN SCANDINAVIA CAN BE A BIT MORE INCONSISTENT. HOW DO YOU TRAIN WHEN THERE’S NO WAVES?

When there are no waves and no rain, I try to get out skating, I like home workouts and start doing more and more of yoga meditation. Ahhh, moving your body feels so so so good! I also must confess that I spend a huge amount time watching surf movies!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE FUTURE? WHAT ARE THE NEXT GOALS YOU’RE HOPING TO ACHIEVE?

My future goals always seem to be changing like seasons in a year, but something nice of this tricky space in time, being forced to stay in on plays has calmed me down a lot, grounded me in away

Right now, my focus is on getting in the rhythm of studying surf as much as I can and plan. I would love to create a space or retreats for cold water surfing woman and searching for ways to be able to accomplish that in the best way! So that is the next goal up to accomplish outside surfing!

Within in the surfing world, I have a love and hate relationship about competition. Performing under pressure and a body full of nerves, that is purely an art! I find it so hard to stay in the right mind set! So that I will continue to work on that!

WE COULDN’T HELP BUT NOTICE THE AMAZING IMAGES YOU SHARE FROM YOUR TRAVELS ON INSTAGRAM! IS PHOTOGRAPHY SOMETHING THAT INSPIRES YOU?

Thank you so much! I absolutely love photography, documenting such a nice way to help to remember. Capture moments, I love it!

ONE THING THAT DEEPLY CONNECTS US IS OUR LOVE FOR WATER, SEA AND SAND, WOULD YOU AGREE? WHERE DOES YOUR LOVE FOR THE NATURE COME FROME?

It is rooted deep, the passion for nature has truly become a part of who I am. That’s where I disconnect and connect. It helps me to be a better person, keeping me in check. Being apart of such an amazing planet, truly influence my choices in my everyday life. Trying to live more and more sustainable every day!

WE LOVE THAT YOU LIKE WEARING OUR PRODUCTS. WHICH PIECE HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE? WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LILJA THE LABEL?

ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM! Of course I am in love with the design and how confident you feel wearing them, but oh my goodness the material is so soft on the skin! So yea the answerer got to be the material!
